Press Release- School Mascot
J.V. Clark School
November 29, 2023
J.V. Clark School is pleased to announce the rebranding of its school mascot to Denyäk Cho (Northern Tutchone for Moose). Going forward, J.V. Clark sports teams will be known as the JVC Denyäk Cho. This name change was made with the utmost consideration and respect to the history and legacy of the Polar Bears. We are excited and look forward to Denyäk Cho representing a new generation of JV Clark students.
The process of changing the school’s mascot was not taken lightly. The idea of a mascot rebrand was first considered as a way to build excitement over the return of sports to JV Clark. JV Clark School student numbers have been in decline over the past several years. As a result, JV Clark students have not had the numbers for school sports teams since 2016. With a large cohort of students moving from elementary to middle school in the fall of 2023, it was recognized that there was opportunity to bring school sports back to JV Clark and boost school spirit at the same time.
In casual conversations with students in the spring of 2023, it was discovered that current students did not necessarily connect to the Polar Bear mascot or even know what the school mascot was. The last time the Polar Bear Club was in operation was determined to be sometime in the 1990s.
In September 2023, school staff and students brainstormed mascot options and Denyäk Cho became a strong contender. It was felt that Denyäk Cho would better reflect local culture and the importance of moose in our community. It would also incorporate and honour our local First Nation language. The moose is a noble and powerful animal. Additionally, there were no other Yukon school sports teams with this name. Most importantly, we wanted a mascot that students felt represented them and a mascot that they felt personally connected to.
Later in the month, we put a poll out to the community on the Mayo Yukon Events Facebook Page. The poll asked, “Are you in favour of changing the JV Clark School Mascot from the Polar Bears to the Denyäk Cho?” It was made very clear, very quickly by the 96 comments and numerous stories, memories and photos posted on the feed that there is a long and proud legacy associated with the Polar Bears. Although the results of the poll were fairly even, we realized that we needed to slow down with the rebrand. We needed to make sure that we were not rushing into anything and considering all options and points of view.
The Mayo Yukon Events Facebook poll and feed was a valuable source of information on the history of the Polar Bears. It brought back many memories for former students. It was inspiring to see how connected former students still were to their school experience so many years later. It made us all the more committed to making sure that we create these same positive connections to school for our current students.
In the second week of November, all classes from Kindergarten to High School were consulted about the school mascot. Each class learned about what a mascot is and they learned about the history of the Polar Bears. We discussed whether or not we should change the mascot and if we did, what it could be changed to. Students gave their input for possible options. Their ideas in addition to Denyäk Cho and the Polar Bears included: Srah Cho (Grizzly Bear), Mak (Mountain Goats), Nunthhi (Foxes), Black Bears, Eagles, Wolves, Bunnies, Dinosaurs, Pike & Buzzing Bees. Out of all the options, students chose their top three choices. When the votes were tallied, the top 3 choices were Denyäk Cho, Polar Bears and Nuntthi.
Last week, the final vote on the school mascot took place. Over three days, all students and staff had the chance to cast their vote by secret ballot in an official Elections Canada voting booth. The election results were overseen and verified by three staff members. The results were as follows:
Denyäk Cho- 25
Nuntthi- 15
Polar Bears- 11
Spoiled Ballot- 1
Total Ballots- 52
Although we are moving forward with this change, we also feel that it is very important to honour the legacy of the Polar Bears. We are planning to create a display in the school with the history and photos of the Polar Bears and perhaps a Heritage Fair project on the subject. We will no doubt be seeking input and stories from former Polar Bears and we look forward to welcoming you all to the school to see it.
From the initial Facebook post, there were many people who felt that changing the mascot would somehow negate their school memories. To that we say, that you will always be a Polar Bear! Your memories and your stories will endure. We are not taking anything away from you. Our intention is to bring the same sense of school spirit and pride to a new generation of Mayo students. We hope that you will find it in you to embrace this exciting change for our students.
Over the past months, with the return of sports and with the conversations and debates on the school mascot, we have felt a surge of school pride here at JV Clark. Our students from Grade 6-10 have participated in four volleyball tournaments, including hosting the first JV Clark Invitational Volleyball Tournament. We are thrilled at the level of engagement in volleyball. 84% of students from Grades 6-11 have been involved with volleyball this past fall. Basketball season has now begun!
In the coming weeks, we will be having a competition to create a new school logo. This logo will be used on school letterhead, swag and new sports uniforms. We also hope to (with some of the Family Feud winnings) purchase a moose mascot costume for use at school events and sports games.
Let’s go, Denyäk Cho!

Principal's Greeting
August 22, 2023
Dear Parents, guardians and community members,
Welcome to the new school year of 2023/24 at JV Clark School.
Speaking on behalf of the teaching team in the school, we are very excited about what this year will bring. Our intention is to broaden the delivery to include inquiry-based learning, experiential learning, ‘On the land’ experiences, off-site sports activities and enhanced cultural and traditional connections to the curriculum.
We have four new teachers joining the teaching team and we would like to invite parents, guardians and community members to join us for a fun ‘meet and greet’ replete with games, snacks, beverages and – of course! – prizes! This will happen on Tuesday September 5th at 6:30 for 7:00. Please RSVP by August 28th by phoning the school on 867-996-2245 or via email: [email protected] Our teaching team is a very talented group with theatrical and drama experience, a qualified engineer, a permanent woodshop teacher, a permanent PE teacher, artists, poets, skiers, potters, beading experts, bakers and athletes. It is our intention to share these passions with students and make school a great place to be. We also welcome local knowledge keepers and traditional artists to contact the school to share their skills and knowledge. We also encourage students to share their interests with teachers.
We have already had a pancake breakfast on the first day of school hosted by the Members of the School Council. Thank you to the Chairperson, Sarah Paschuk and School Council members – Ian Spencer, Terra Blanchard, Mymee Chow and Ashley Churches for providing a fabulous pancake breakfast complete with whipped cream, sausages and fresh strawberries.
Also, look forward to a special event happening sometime during the week of September 11th. Day and time to be determined where we will have a ‘live event showing’ of a Family Feud game show starring our very own teachers – Ms Amy, Ms McCauley, Ms Caroline, Mr Reid and Mr Stauffer. Only these esteemed game show contestants – as part of ‘National Teacher Week’ on Family Feud – know the final result! Very exciting!
If you have any questions and/or wish to share ideas and thoughts, please feel to contact the school.
Yours faithfully,
Douglas Cooper
